**One-line:** A theory-of-consciousness paper proposing three necessary conditions — (1) a unified generative **reality model / epistemic field**, (2) **inferential competition / Bayesian binding** to enter it, (3) **epistemic depth** (recursive, non-local self-reflective sharing of the model, governed by a precision **hyper-model** Φ). The three together form the "beautiful loop." It then reads altered states (meditation, psychedelics, sleep/lucidity, cessation) through this frame.

**Genre caveat for Waypoint:** This is conceptual/formal, not a measurement study — "No data was used" (Data availability). It is *testable/falsifiable at the level of computational modeling*, not yet validated on humans. Its value to Waypoint is a **rigorous phenomenological construct-space + vocabulary** (epistemic depth, precision distribution, dereification, MPE, cessation) that maps cleanly onto Wheel pillars/phases, plus a reference list that is the field's own best-of for measuring these states. Treat every phenomenological "state → coordinate" placement as illustrative, not measured.

## 1. USABLE FOR STAGE ASSESSMENT

The paper hands Waypoint a **3-axis phenomenological state space** and several graded constructs. None is a staging scheme per se, but each is a candidate latent dimension or marker family, and several map directly onto the Wheel pillars (awareness / thoughts / emotions / sensations) and onto phase.

### 1a. The core state-space: abstraction × precision-distribution × epistemic depth (Figs 5 & 6)
Three orthogonal axes onto which meditation *states* (not traits/practices) are placed:
- **Abstraction** (low→high): from raw sensations/objects up to narrative self, reasoning, concepts. Where in the hierarchy attention/precision sits.
- **Precision distribution**: **gathered** (precision concentrated on one level of abstraction — a quiet, focused mind, e.g. focused attention / FA) vs **dispersed** (precision spread across many contents — open, panoramic mind).
- **Epistemic depth** (low→high): clarity/intensity of *knowing that you know* — the recursive self-reflective "sensation of knowing."

These give Waypoint an operational decomposition instead of a scalar. Mapping to pillars: abstraction axis ≈ which pillar/content is engaged (sensations→emotions→thoughts→awareness); precision-distribution ≈ concentration vs openness style; epistemic depth ≈ the **awareness pillar's** depth/clarity, largely orthogonal to *what* is attended.

**In a transcript, epistemic depth (high) looks like:** vivid, lucid, self-aware reporting — "I was clearly aware of being aware," "I could watch the whole field at once and know I was watching it," metacognitive precision about one's own state. **Low epistemic depth:** foggy, on-autopilot, "I zoned out," "I don't really know what happened," mind-wandering described without noticing it was wandering. Crucially this is *independent of arousal/effort* — see the dullness discriminator below.

### 1b. FA → OM → Non-dual progression (precision distribution shifts)
- **Focused attention (FA):** gathered precision, low–medium abstraction, comparatively low epistemic depth. Transcript: single-object stability ("I stayed on the breath," "kept coming back to the sensation at the nostrils").
- **Open awareness / open monitoring (OM):** dispersed precision, higher abstraction, higher epistemic depth. Transcript: "I let everything come and go," "aware of the whole field without picking anything out."
- **Non-dual awareness (ND):** luminous awareness present at *any* abstraction level, highest epistemic depth, subject–object duality softening. Transcript: "there was no one meditating," "awareness aware of itself," "no separation between me and what I saw," self-as-space/awareness language. This is the classic FA→OM→ND continuum (from Laukkonen & Slagter's *many-to-(n)one*) rendered as movement in the state space — a plausible ordering signal along the awareness pillar toward Awakening/Unbinding.

### 1c. Dereification (strongest linguistic stage marker in the paper)
Dereification = experiencing thoughts/emotions/percepts as **mental constructs** rather than inherent realities; increases with epistemic depth (higher depth → phenomena become *opaque*, seen as constructed, rather than *transparent*/taken as real). Grounded in the Buddhist three characteristics (*anicca* impermanence, *dukkha* unsatisfactoriness, *anatta* not-self).
- **Transcript discriminator (high stage):** "anger arose and passed," "a thought appeared," "the sadness wasn't me, it was just an event," treating experiences as impermanent, ownerless, constructed.
- **vs (low stage / naïve realism):** "I *am* anxious," "this is just how things are," reifying emotions and self as solid, enduring, inherently real.
- **Caution built in (see §3):** dereified *phrasing* is exactly what a map-reading practitioner learns to produce — this is Waypoint's "insight vocabulary vs lived insight" confusion pair. The marker discriminates only when corroborated by behavior/consistency, not from vocabulary alone.

### 1d. Minimal Phenomenal Experience (MPE) / pure awareness / "tonic alertness"
Formal definition: MPE occurs when **epistemic depth is maximally high AND the reality model is contentless** (minimal precision on ordinary content, but a highly *gathered hyper-precision*). Phenomenology: luminous, clear, simple, singular, non-dual, "openness," bare capacity for knowing — "vividly self-aware yet informationally sparse." Metzinger's tonic alertness; Upanishadic *sushupti*; classical "clarity and luminosity."
- **Transcript (advanced marker):** reports of contentless awareness — "there was just awareness, no objects," "aware but nothing to be aware of," "spacious, clear, empty but alert," often on waking or in deep sitting.
- **Directly resolves the absorption-vs-dullness confusion pair:** MPE/absorption is **high epistemic depth + gathered hyper-precision**; dullness/sleepiness is **low epistemic depth**. Same low-content report, opposite depth. Probe for clarity-of-knowing to discriminate: genuine MPE reporters describe vivid knowing; dull states describe fogginess/absence.

### 1e. Cessation / nirodha ("small death," Stage-3 Unbinding phenomenology)
Cessation = brief (and rarely longer) periods where the reality model transiently **collapses/unbinds** — no experience occurs (akin to endogenous general anesthesia); a "reset." Reached by *actively deconstructing* the reality model (letting go of clinging; deconstructing the five aggregates). After-effects (post-cessation): profound **clarity, freshness, cognitive/emotional flexibility, positive affect, compassion**; sometimes an axiomatic shift in perspective; improved ability to meditate.
- **Transcript (Stage-3 marker, `small_death` milestone):** reports of gaps/discontinuities — "I blinked out," "there was a break and then everything came back fresh," "I don't think anything happened but something reset," waking up changed. May *not* be noticed as an absence — reported as a shift rather than a blank.
- **After-effect signature is corroborating evidence** even when the event itself is not clearly reported: unusual post-sit clarity/flexibility/compassion clustered in time.

### 1f. Lucidity gradients across sleep (sustained-depth inertia marker)
Epistemic depth is diminished in NREM (minimal/absent reality model) and richer in REM but typically low lucidity ("we don't know that we know" we are dreaming). **Lucid dreaming** = epistemic depth significantly increased vs non-lucid REM (partial reactivation of reflective mechanisms). **Lucid dreamless sleep / "clear light sleep"** = very low abstraction but high epistemic depth (contentless but aware) — rare, associated with advanced practice.
- **Transcript (advanced marker):** spontaneous lucid dreams, reflective awareness carrying into sleep, "clear light" / aware-during-deep-sleep reports. The paper's mechanism: daytime meta-awareness/reflective habit builds "inertia" that spills into sleep — so lucidity frequency is a plausible proxy for *habitual* epistemic depth (a trait-ish signal, not just a state).

### 1g. Meta-awareness, insight/"Eureka," and System-2 as depth-dependent
- Everyday **meta-awareness** (noticing mind-wandering, being aware of thinking) is graded epistemic depth in daily life — a low-cost passive-conversation signal.
- **Insight/Eureka** and **System-2 analytic reasoning** depend on epistemic depth; deep analytic work can feel like flow with low awareness *of* the doing. Relevant to distinguishing the *thoughts/clarity* pillar's development.

### 1h. Cross-framework concordance (Table 2)
Maps Beautiful Loop's five features (reality model, binding, inferential competition, reflexivity, epistemic depth, widespread sharing, MPE) against GNWS, IIT, RPT, HOT with explicit ↝ (resonance) / ✗ (no equivalent) marks. Useful as a template for a disciplined Wheel-band ↔ construct-dimension concordance (see §2).

### 1i. Psychedelic caution-marker
Psychedelics reliably increase the *feeling* of expanded awareness / noetic certainty (knowing, realness) via epistemic-depth boost + prior relaxation (REBUS) — but "the concomitant relaxation of learned beliefs... may not necessarily favour accurate models." A confident felt-sense of insight ≠ accurate/advanced insight. Directly relevant to devotional/mystical-intensity-vs-destabilization and enthusiasm-inflation confusions.

## 2. METHODOLOGY WORTH COPYING

This is a theory paper, so "methodology" = modeling/operationalization moves, not measurement protocols:

1. **Decompose the state into orthogonal axes, not a scalar (Figs 5–6).** The abstraction × precision-distribution × epistemic-depth cube is exactly the spirit of Waypoint's per-pillar profile + position/phase split. Consider adopting a small orthogonal latent basis (e.g. a "clarity/epistemic-depth" latent distinct from a "content/abstraction" latent and a "concentration-openness" latent) rather than collapsing everything into band position. It makes "2.4-deep in awareness, untrained emotions" representable.

2. **Formalize before you claim (Table 1).** Every construct is tied to a generative-model equation (multilayer generative process, global hyper-model, local/hyper free-energy). Waypoint's estimator memo should likewise pin each marker/likelihood to an explicit place in the Bayesian state space rather than leaving markers as loose adjectives.

3. **Cross-framework concordance table with explicit similarity marks (Table 2).** Copy this format for a Wheel-band ↔ construct concordance: for each band/pillar, mark which literature constructs resonate (↝) or don't (✗), forcing honesty about where the model has empirical support vs none.

4. **Triangulate neurophenomenology.** The paper leans on Lutz et al.'s program of triangulating first-person reports with neural/behavioral data — the same triangulated-calibration stance Waypoint takes (Surya interview + dossier + telemetry + instruments). Cite it as precedent for the method.

5. **Name existing validated instruments for the target constructs** (mined for the psychometrics lane): **NADA** (Nondual Awareness Dimensional Assessment; Hanley et al. 2018) and the **MPE-92M** pure-awareness questionnaire (Gamma & Metzinger 2021) are purpose-built for exactly the ND/MPE phenomenology at the top of the Wheel — strong candidates for the one-time calibration battery. Also Fleming's metacognition-measurement work for the epistemic-depth/meta-awareness axis.

## 3. CAUTIONS

1. **No empirical validation.** Conceptual/formal only ("No data was used"); testable in principle, untested in practice. Do not cite it as evidence *that* a marker tracks stage — cite it for the *construct* and its predicted phenomenology.

2. **State-placement in the cube is illustrative.** The positions of FA/OM/ND/MPE/mind-wandering in Figs 5–6 are conceptual sketches, not measured coordinates. Don't hard-code thresholds off them.

3. **The paper is itself a vocabulary-contamination vector.** It supplies rich, quotable phenomenological language (epistemic depth, dereification, luminosity, non-dual, cessation-as-reset). A map-reading practitioner (the whole team cohort, per spec §7) can reproduce this language without the lived attainment. Every §1 linguistic marker must be scored on *structure + behavioral corroboration + consistency*, never on presence of the vocabulary. This is the paper's implicit warning made explicit for Waypoint.

4. **Felt-knowing is not accurate-knowing.** The psychedelic/noetic passage and cited work (Grimmer et al. 2022/2023 on *eliciting false insights*; "deeply felt effect" without truth) warn that a confident *sensation of knowing* can be induced and false. Self-reported certainty/insight/expanded-awareness is a marker of felt epistemic depth, not of correctness or stage — deflate its weight and cross-check.

5. **MPE looks like its opposite.** "Vividly self-aware yet informationally sparse" is phenomenologically close to dullness/absence on a surface read; only the clarity-of-knowing dimension separates them. Any low-content report needs a depth probe before it's scored as advanced.

6. **Absence may not be noticed.** Cessations "may not always be noticed... instead noticed as a shift or axiomatic change." So `small_death`/cessation self-report will be *under*-claimed and oddly described — weight after-effect signatures, don't expect clean "I experienced a cessation" statements.

7. **Weak/speculative links flagged by the authors themselves:** proto-epistemic-depth in cells/insects, the specific broadcast channels (neuromodulator sprays, EM fields) — all marked speculative and irrelevant to Waypoint. Ignore the substrate mechanism; keep the phenomenology.
