# Lane 1 — How Contemplative Traditions *Verify* Stage/Attainment

**Status:** research-phase lane dossier, v1 — compiled 2026-07-16 for the Waypoint research pass (spec §10, Lane 1).
**Scope:** the *assessment methodology* each tradition actually uses — not the maps themselves (those are Lane 1's cartography half + the internal-canon note). For each tradition: (a) what it treats as **observable** evidence of stage, (b) what it insists **only a teacher (live) can see**, (c) the **verification questions/probes** it actually uses, (d) its **known failure modes** (overclaiming, scripting, teacher bias). Ends with the **20 verification-question patterns** most transferable to Waypoint's invisible conversational probes (spec §5.2).
**Audience:** technically fluent reader who has read the spec. Every empirical/citational claim is source-tagged; unverifiable items are marked UNVERIFIED.

**One finding governs the whole lane.** Every serious tradition asserts an *information ceiling on report-only assessment* — it insists some part of attainment is visible only to a live teacher in real-time interaction, never from a text or a recording. This is the traditions' own version of the spec's headline number: the **interview-vs-dossier delta** (spec §7.3). The traditions have been running that experiment for a millennium and their unanimous verdict is *the delta is real and large*. Waypoint should treat a data-only estimator as structurally handicapped relative to Surya's live interview, and quantify the gap rather than assume it away.

A second finding governs the marker bank. Traditions that survived contact with generations of ambitious students converge on **structure-scoring over content-scoring**: they score *how* an experience is reported and *what the practitioner does next*, never the doctrinal correctness of the words — precisely because the words are the most easily faked layer. This is the spec's "insight vocabulary vs lived insight" confusion pair (§3), and the traditions independently arrived at Waypoint's intended countermeasure.

## 1. Theravāda — Progress of Insight (ñāṇa) via the Mahāsi practice interview

**The map (for reference):** the sixteen *ñāṇas* (knowledges) of the Visuddhimagga/Mahāsi *vipassanā ñāṇa* sequence, with the *dukkha ñāṇas* (stages ~5–11: dissolution, fear, misery, disgust, desire-for-deliverance, re-observation) as the "dark night" region and the path/fruition moment (magga/phala) as stream-entry. (Detail in the cartography half; the corpus notes map fruition/cessation to Wheel points 50–51.)

**How it is actually verified — the practice interview.** The Mahāsi tradition does *not* ask "what ñāṇa are you in?" It runs a tightly structured **phenomenological debrief** and infers stage from the *structure* of the report. The canonical statement is Sayadaw U Paṇḍita's three-phase reporting formula in *In This Very Life* (Wisdom Publications, 1992; free full text at aimwell.org and bps.lk), in the section "What Occurred, How You Noted It, What Happened to It":

1. **What occurred** — identify the object that arose (the primary rise/fall of the abdomen, then any object at the six sense doors).
2. **How you noted it** — report the act of noting/labeling ("wandering, wandering"), including *how soon after arising* you noticed it.
3. **What happened to it** — describe what you then saw/felt/understood, and the object's fate (vanished instantly, persisted, faded gradually).

U Paṇḍita's "apple" analogy fixes the grain: a teacher raises an apple; you turn toward it, recognize it, say "apple," then discern red, round, shiny. The report is scored on **metacognitive granularity and temporal resolution of noticing**, not on the emotional content. Sharon Salzberg's lived example of the register: *"Sadness arose, I noted it as sadness, I felt it as trembling, an ache in the chest…"*

**What counts as observable:** the *latency* between an object arising and the practitioner noticing it; whether noting is continuous or intermittent; whether phenomena are reported as *processes that arise and pass* (anicca made lived) vs static facts; spontaneous reports of dissolution/vibration/effortlessness. Panditārāma Lumbini's additional instructions (Sayadaw U Vivekānanda, mahasi.net) demand reports be "short and to the point, adhering to scientific standards of perseverance, accuracy and precision" — and, tellingly, that meditators report **only their single best sitting and best walking** from the last 24 h. Structure and precision over volume.

**What only a teacher can see:** stage *placement* itself. The tradition never lets the yogi self-certify a ñāṇa; the teacher triangulates across successive daily interviews (typically ~6/week at Panditārāma) and watches the *trajectory* of reports, not any single one. Fruition (stream-entry) is inferred from a characteristic report pattern plus after-effects, and is famously under-claimed by genuine attainers and over-claimed by readers.

**Known failure modes:**
- **Map contamination / scripting.** Yogis who have read the ñāṇa maps (e.g. Mahāsi's *Progress of Insight*, or Ingram's *Mastering the Core Teachings*) narrate the expected sequence. The tradition's explicit countermeasure is the honesty injunction — Panditārāma's instruction: *"Be honest, sincere, accurate and frank… do not conceal anything or try to please the teacher"* — and scoring the *how* (which is hard to fake) over the *what* (which is on Wikipedia).
- **Please-the-teacher distortion** (self-presentation), named and warned against in the instructions themselves.
- **Over-eager fruition claims**, the reason teachers demand corroborating trait/behavior change, not just a "cessation" report.

**Transfer to Waypoint (highest-value in the lane):** the three-phase report **is a probe scoring key**. Ask for a recent episode of a difficult emotion and score whether the practitioner spontaneously reports the *sequence* (arose → noticed → labeled → what happened to it) with short noticing-latency, vs collapsing into content ("I was just anxious all day"). Metacognitive granularity + noticing-latency is a graded, hard-to-fake awareness-pillar marker.

## 2. Jhāna verification — the "lite vs deep" debate, and the neurophenomenology program

**Why this matters to Waypoint:** the four/eight jhānas are the absorption ladder the spec's confusion pair "absorption vs dullness" lives on, and the Wheel places nirodha-samāpatti at ~51. But jhāna is the tradition where "what counts as the attainment" is *openly contested*, which is itself the lesson.

**The debate (verified via leighb.com and the primary texts):**
- **Sutta-style / "lite" jhāna (Leigh Brasington, *Right Concentration*, Shambhala 2015).** Entry via **access concentration**, then shift attention to a pleasant sensation and let jhāna "come find you"; *no visual nimitta required*; accessible to many on a retreat. Brasington's own comparison page (leighb.com/jhanantp.htm) frames the split explicitly.
- **Visuddhimagga-style / "deep" jhāna (Pa-Auk Tawya Sayadaw, *Mindfulness of Breathing / Ānāpānassati*).** Entry *requires* a stabilized counterpart-sign (*paṭibhāga-nimitta*) — a luminous mental object — into which the mind absorbs; mastery is certified by the **five masteries** (adverting, attaining, resolving/duration, emerging, reviewing) over each absorption, sustainable for hours. Pa-Auk insists on attaining all four jhānas *before* insight investigation. Brasington notes the Visuddhimagga's own claim that only ~1 in 1,000,000 reach this depth; ~1/3 of Pa-Auk monastics succeed, Western laypeople "seldom" without multi-month retreat.

**What counts as observable in each:** presence/absence and stability of the nimitta; the five jhāna factors (vitakka, vicāra, pīti, sukha, ekaggatā) reported as present then progressively dropped across J1→J4; **duration and volitional control** (can the practitioner enter, sustain a pre-resolved length, and exit cleanly — the five masteries); the J4→J5 "body drop" into the formless; J6 "awareness aware of itself"; J7 "void with subtle fear"; J8 near-ineffable (per the Vohryzek/Sacchet cartography in the corpus).

**The verification lesson: the definitional split means a report alone underdetermines the attainment.** The *same words* ("I entered jhāna") denote a light pleasant absorption or a 2-hour nimitta-locked state depending on lineage. The tradition's discriminator is **volitional control and duration** (the five masteries) — behavior, not phenomenological vocabulary. Directly usable: score claimed absorption on *reproducibility-at-will and sustained duration*, not on the label.

**Neurophenomenology — where the field itself trusts the measurement (seeds Lane 2/6):** the modern program time-locks first-person state labels (button presses) to brain data on extreme adepts. Verified sources:
- Hagerty, Isaacs, Brasington, Shupe, Fetz & Cramer (2013), "Case study of ecstatic meditation: fMRI and EEG evidence of self-stimulating a reward system," *Neural Plasticity* 2013:653572, DOI 10.1155/2013/653572 — jhānic joy co-activates the nucleus accumbens (dopamine/opioid reward), i.e. pīti has a reward-system signature.
- Sacchet-lab jhāna case-study series (all PubMed-verified): Yang, Sparby, Wright, Kim & Sacchet (2024) *Heliyon* e31223 (phenomenology of ACAM/jhāna); Yang et al. (2024) *Cereb. Cortex* bhad408 (7T volitional control); Demir, Yang & Sacchet (2025) *Cereb. Cortex* bhaf079 (connectivity gradients); Chowdhury et al. (2025) *NeuroImage* 120973 (intensively-sampled multimodal case study); Ganesan et al. (2024) *Hum. Brain Mapp.* (within-subject reliability); Treves et al. (2025) *Network Neuroscience* netn_a_00432; Potash et al. (2025) *J. Cogn. Neurosci.*; Lieberman & Sacchet (2026) *Neurosci. Biobehav. Rev.* 106520 (review).

**Known failure modes:** definitional equivocation (the "lite/deep" gap — two people "in jhāna" at very different depths); pīti/bliss mistaken for the goal (see Patanjali §8 and the "absorption vs dullness" pair); N-of-1 neuroscience on hand-picked adepts (Sacchet program refuses p-values, reports effect sizes — a methodology note the spec's synthetic-persona QA should copy).

## 3. Zen — kōan checking (sassho), the private interview (dokusan/sanzen), and ox-herding pedagogy

**Verification is adversarial, live, and non-verbal-first.** A student's grasp of a kōan is tested in a **private interview** (Jp. *dokusan*, *daisan*, or *sanzen*) where understanding must be *demonstrated*, not described. Barbara O'Brien's summation (via the Wikipedia/Zen-Sand material): proving one's understanding in the interview "is the real point of the whole exercise." Primary scholarly source: Victor Sōgen Hori, *Zen Sand: The Book of Capping Phrases for Kōan Practice* (U. Hawai'i Press, 2003); and Miura & Sasaki, *The Zen Kōan*.

**The probing apparatus (three parts):**
- **Sassho (拶所, "checking questions").** For a major kōan (Mu, the one-hand) there are **between 20 and 100 checking questions** per lineage. They come at the insight from fresh, unscripted angles to test whether it is *lived* or merely *presented* — and, critically, to *deepen* it. This is the tradition's purpose-built anti-faking instrument.
- **Jakugo (着語, "capping phrase").** After passing a kōan, the student must attach a classical verse that *expresses* the insight indirectly — proof-of-solution rather than the solution. This is pure **structure-scoring**: insight demonstrated through spontaneous fitting expression, not doctrinal statement.
- **Standardized answers.** In the Inzan and Takujū Rinzai lines, kōan answers are "more or less standardized" (Miura/Sasaki).

**What counts as observable:** the *immediacy and embodiment* of the response (a genuine turning-word answer is instantaneous, physical, non-conceptual); the ability to field arbitrary follow-up sassho without falling back on explanation; the aptness of the capping phrase.

**What only a teacher can see:** *kenshō*/*satori* itself. Dharma transmission is a teacher-to-teacher "mind seal"; the tradition holds that only a realized teacher can distinguish genuine seeing from a clever intellectual counterfeit — hence the live interview is irreplaceable.

**Ox-herding pictures as pedagogy (not a scored ladder).** The Ten Bulls (Ch. *shíniú*; Kuòān Shīyuǎn, 12th c. Linji) map the arc: search → traces → seeing → catching → taming → riding home → ox forgotten → both forgotten (empty circle) → return to source → **entering the marketplace with open hands** (#10, the Budai/Hotei figure — compassionate re-engagement, "no smell of enlightenment" remaining). Teachers stress these **describe, not prescribe**; Martine Batchelor: progress is a *spiral*, revisiting stages "with more understanding," not a straight line. This is direct support for the spec's **phase model and non-linearity** (§3, §6): a mature practitioner *returns* to ordinary life and difficulty (marketplace) — advanced ≠ permanently rarefied.

**Known failure modes (Zen names its own most sharply):**
- **Scripting via standardized answers** — the single clearest tradition-internal example of the spec's contamination risk. Because answers to Mu are semi-public, passing a kōan by rote is a known corruption; sassho (fresh checking questions) exists precisely to defeat it. **Lesson for Waypoint: any probe with a discoverable "correct answer" is game-able; the countermeasure is unscripted follow-ups from an angle the map doesn't cover.**
- **Kenshō over-claiming / "stinking of Zen"** — parading enlightenment is itself evidence of immaturity (echoes Trungpa's *spiritual materialism*, §4).
- **Teacher/lineage bias** — standardized-answer lineages can certify form over substance.

## 4. Tibetan / Dzogchen & Mahāmudrā — experience (nyams) vs realization (rigpa), pointing-out, and signs of warmth

**The single most transferable discriminator in the whole lane.** Dzogchen/Mahāmudrā formally separate **nyams (meditation experiences)** from **realization**. The "three experiences" (*nyams gsum*): **bliss** (*bde ba'i nyams*), **clarity/luminosity** (*gsal ba'i nyams*), and **non-thought** (*mi rtog pa'i nyams*) (Rigpa Wiki, "Three experiences"; source texts incl. Dudjom Lingpa's *Vajra Essence*, Longchenpa's *Finding Ease in Meditation*). These are "signs of progress" — *and* the classic trap.

- **Nyams are conditioned and impermanent** — they come and go, arise from tendencies in the ālaya, and **become obstacles the moment they are grasped as attainment**.
- **Realization is unchanging** — Tai Situ's *Oral Transmission of the Supreme Siddhas*: bliss-as-experience is changeable and comes/goes; bliss-as-realization is "supremely unchanging." The diagnostic is not *which* experience arises but whether it is **reified/grasped vs recognized-and-released**.

**This is exactly the spec's "equanimity vs bypassing" and "absorption vs dullness" territory, plus the reification axis** the corpus notes flag as the strongest linguistic stage marker (Laukkonen "dereification"). A practitioner who narrates "I reached a blissful thought-free state and *that's* the attainment" is displaying nyams-grasping (lower); one who reports the same state as "a passing condition I didn't hold onto" is displaying the realization stance (higher). **Non-attachment to states, not the states themselves, is the marker.**

**What counts as observable:** *stability across sessions and off the cushion* (a nyam is state-bound; realization pervades post-meditation); the practitioner's *relationship to* bliss/clarity/non-thought (grasped vs held lightly); self-liberation of thought (thoughts "release of their own nature," Namkhai Norbu's trekchö).

**What only a teacher can see (emphatic here):** the difference between rigpa and a subtle nyam. The tradition holds that **only a realized master can confirm recognition of rigpa** — this is the entire function of the **pointing-out instruction** (*ngo sprod*), which must be given live, and of the master's ongoing confirmation. "Signs of warmth" (*drod rtags*, heat-signs of practice maturing) and dream/experiential signs are read *by the teacher*, not self-certified. Namkhai Norbu and others further warn that **imposing a paths-and-stages grid on Dzogchen is itself "a great deviation"** — a caution against over-quantifying the top of the Wheel.

**Known failure modes:**
- **Mistaking nyams for realization** — the tradition's #1 named error, structurally identical to the spec's contamination/over-claim risk.
- **Spiritual materialism** (Chögyam Trungpa, *Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism*, 1973 — UNVERIFIED exact pagination but the concept is canonical): using attainments to fortify ego; parading experiences.
- **Vocabulary contamination** — "rigpa," "self-liberation," "non-dual" are learnable words; the tradition trusts the teacher's live read over the student's phrasing.

## 5. Mahāyāna bhūmis & Vajrayāna vidyādhara levels — threshold events and separable axes

**Bhūmis (ten bodhisattva grounds; *Daśabhūmika Sūtra* / Avataṃsaka ch. 31).** The **1st bhūmi ("Very Joyous," Pramuditā) is a threshold event**: the *first direct perception of emptiness*, simultaneous with entering the **path of seeing** (3rd of the 5 paths). Crucially for Waypoint: **meditative equipoise is said to be identical across all bhūmis — only the *post-meditation* qualities differ** (Rigpa Wiki; Samye Institute; Thubten Chodron). Advanced stage is discriminated by **trait/off-cushion qualities (the paramitas — generosity at bhūmi 1, etc.), not by peak-state phenomenology.** This is a strong argument for weighting *behavioral/trait* markers over *state-report* markers when separating the higher bands.

**Vidyādhara levels (four rigdzin, Nyingma/Dzogchen; Rigpa Wiki "Four vidyadhara levels"; Longchenpa's presentation; Tulku Thondup *Enlightened Journey*):** matured (*rnam smin*) → power-over-life (*tshe dbang*) → mahāmudrā (*phyag chen*) → spontaneously-accomplished (*lhun grub*). Decision-relevant structure: the **matured vidyādhara has ripened the *mind* into the deity but has *not* purified the *body*** — realization and somatic/energetic transformation are **explicitly separable axes**. This is a traditional precedent for Waypoint's **per-pillar profile** (§3): a practitioner can be advanced in one axis (awareness/mind) while another (body/energy) lags.

**What only a teacher / lineage can see:** bhūmi and vidyādhara placement are never self-assigned; they are conferred/confirmed within a transmission lineage, and the bhūmi↔vidyādhara correlations are themselves debated (Longchenpa vs Wallace-attributed schemes differ). **Failure mode:** lineage inflation (hagiographic over-assignment), and the debate itself warns that fine placement at these bands is not consensually verifiable.

## 6. Neidan (Daoist internal alchemy) — somatic verification signs, oral-only timing, and the deviation/safety analog

**Directly load-bearing for the Wheel's Stage-2 breathwork pillar (2.1) and the reverse-breathing gate.** Neidan stages: foundation-building (*zhùjī*, "100 days") → refine essence→qi (*liàn jīng huà qì*) → refine qi→spirit → refine spirit→emptiness (Baidu/Pregadio scholarship).

**What counts as observable — somatic signs (the most "objective" markers in the lane):** heat/pressure in the lower *dāntián* ("golden stove"); a warm current circulating the microcosmic orbit (Du/Ren channels); **sweet saliva ("Golden Fluid/Jade Dew")** as a specific verification sign that qi has completed the circuit; illness-reduction as a foundation-stage marker. These are near-physiological and comparatively hard to fabricate in a detailed report.

**What only a teacher can see — *huǒhòu* ("fire timing"):** classically transmitted **orally only**, under a master's supervision — "the sage only transmits the ingredients, not the fire; few know the fire time." The subtle regulation of practice intensity is held to be un-writable and un-self-certifiable. (Reverse breathing, per the internal canon, is "the door to all internal alchemy" and a hard Stage-2→3 gate — its correct establishment is exactly this teacher-gated timing knowledge.)

**Failure-mode / safety analog (maps to spec §8 teacher-flag):** Neidan has an explicit, named **miscultivation syndrome** — energy rising uncontrolled to the head, headaches, insomnia, nervous-system strain (colloquially *zǒu huǒ rù mó*, "fire runs, demons enter"). Wrong practice produces recognizable adverse signs. **This is a direct traditional precedent for Waypoint's safety duty:** advanced energetic practice carries *characteristic destabilization signatures* distinct from progress, and the tradition treats them as flags requiring a teacher's correction — the spec's "devotional/mystical intensity vs destabilization" pair with an intervention protocol attached.

---

## 7. Sufism — maqāmāt (stations) vs aḥwāl (states): the position-vs-phase distinction, pre-built

**This is the spec's §3 "position vs phase" split, articulated by 11th-c. Sufis with a precision Waypoint can lift wholesale.** Sources: al-Qushayrī, *al-Risāla*; al-Hujwīrī, *Kashf al-Maḥjūb*; al-Kalābādhī.

| Axis | **Maqām (station)** = **position** | **Ḥāl (state)** = **phase** |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | **Acquired** through effort ("earned by the sweat of one's brow") | **Given** — descends from God, cannot be summoned or repelled (al-Hujwīrī) |
| Duration | **Stable, permanent**; retained even when transcended | **Transient**; "called *ḥāl* for its switching" (changeable by nature) |
| Volition | Practitioner is **active**; can re-enter at will | Practitioner is **passive**; cannot reproduce it |
| Progression | Strictly hierarchical — cannot advance to the next until the prior is fulfilled (al-Qushayrī); "no teleporting" | Comes and goes independently of the station |

Classic maqāmāt (7, majority list): tawba, wara', zuhd, faqr, ṣabr, tawakkul, riḍā. Typical aḥwāl: expansion/contraction (*basṭ/qabḍ*), longing, awe, intimacy. Al-Kalābādhī ties them: "every station has a beginning and an end, and between these two are the various states." Najm al-Dīn al-Kubrā's metaphor: stations are resting-places; states are the *transport* between them.

**Verification implication (transferable):** the discriminator between a durable attainment and a passing experience is **volitional reproducibility + persistence**. Ask whether a reported capacity is *summonable at will and stable* (station/position — counts toward the band posterior) or a *gift the practitioner cannot reproduce* (state/phase — annotate as phase, do **not** advance the slow latent). This is precisely the spec's rule that phase annotations contextualize evidence and only persistent runs revise the slow position (§6, HGF-style). **Sufism also warns the boundary is disputed** (riḍā was a station for Khurāsān, a state for Iraq) — a caution that the position/phase call is genuinely hard and rater-dependent.

## 8. Patañjali — samprajñāta/asamprajñāta samādhi: an object-subtlety depth axis, and the "bliss is not the end" warning

**Yoga Sūtras 1.17–1.18, 1.42–1.51.** *Samprajñāta samādhi* (cognitive, with an object) has four progressively subtler supports: **vitarka** (gross object/reasoning) → **vicāra** (subtle object) → **ānanda** (bliss — absorption in the *instrument* of cognition, sāttvic joy) → **asmitā** (pure "I-am," the *knower*, subtler than bliss). Each further subdivides (savitarka/nirvitarka, savicāra/nirvicāra). **Asamprajñāta samādhi** (1.18) is *objectless* — all fluctuations cease; only this destroys the seeds of saṃskāras and yields kaivalya. (Sources: Vyāsa's *Bhāṣya* via WisdomLib; Bryant.)

**Two decision-relevant transfers:**
1. **Subtlety of the object of absorption is itself a depth axis.** Where a practitioner's steady attention naturally rests — gross sensation vs subtle mental object vs bliss vs bare I-am-ness vs objectless — is a graded, structure-scorable marker of absorption depth. This refines the crude "absorption vs dullness" pair (both are low-content, but they differ in *what is known* and *how subtly*).
2. **The bliss-is-terminal error, named.** ānanda is explicitly **not** the endpoint — asmitā is subtler, and even asmitā is surpassed by the objectless state. A practitioner who treats a blissful absorption as the summit is displaying a placement-revealing *misidentification* (same structural error as Dzogchen nyams-grasping and the Patanjali/Sacchet pīti findings). **Contradiction/interpretation caveat:** Vyāsa reads the four as sequential *stages*; Śaṅkara and Vācaspati Miśra read them as co-existing *forms* — so the ladder is not a hard ordinal scale, only a subtlety gradient.

**Failure mode:** noetic bliss/certainty mistaken for final realization — reinforced by the corpus note that noetic certainty is *inducible and false* (Grimmer, McGovern via the beautiful-loop note): felt-knowing ≠ accurate-knowing. Deflate self-reported "I knew it was ultimate."

---

## 9. Christian mysticism — Teresa's mansions, and John of the Cross's three signs (the dark-night differential)

**Teresa of Ávila, *Interior Castle* (1577) — seven *moradas* (mansions).** A progression from the outer rooms (soul preoccupied by sin/worldliness) to spiritual marriage in the seventh. Two features Waypoint should copy:
- **Growth is "gradual and imperceptible," and each mansion has *many rooms*** — Teresa insists it is *not* discrete steps and "not everyone follows exactly the same path." Direct support for a **distribution over bands rather than a discrete label**, and for **per-pillar unevenness** (different souls advance different faculties).
- **Discernment of counterfeit consolations** — Teresa is preoccupied with distinguishing genuine infused grace from imagination/self-generated feeling, the Christian version of nyams-vs-realization.

**John of the Cross — the three signs of the passive night of the senses (*Dark Night*, Book I, ch. 9; CCEL).** This is the **canonical dark-night-vs-depression rubric**, and it is the most operationalizable thing in the Christian corpus for the spec's confusion pair (§3) and safety duty (§8). All **three must co-occur**, and John explicitly distinguishes them from "melancholy" (depression), lukewarmness, and bodily indisposition:
1. **No consolation anywhere** — the soul finds no pleasure in the things of God *nor in any created thing* (whereas depression/sin would leave appetite for worldly pleasures intact).
2. **Painful, loving anxiety about serving God** — memory dwells on God with anxious solicitude, fearing it has failed Him (i.e. *longing and care are retained and even intensified* — the opposite of anhedonic withdrawal).
3. **Inability to meditate discursively** — the former imaginative/effortful method stops working, because communication has moved to a subtler infused mode.

**Transfer (dark night vs clinical depression):** the discriminator is **retained/heightened longing-and-care toward the path plus a felt reorientation (loss of the *old method*), amid dryness** (dark night) vs **global anhedonia, self-reproach, and loss of the goal itself** (depression). John's own insistence that all three signs be present and that they be distinguished from melancholy is a ready-made, centuries-tested differential — directly relevant to Lane 4's flag-threshold design.

**What only a teacher/director can see:** John and Teresa both route discernment through a spiritual director; the counterfeit-vs-genuine call is not self-certified.

**Failure modes:** mistaking depression/acedia for the dark night (John's whole reason for the three signs), and mistaking self-generated emotional consolation for infused grace (Teresa).

## 10. Hawkins' Map of Consciousness — the cautionary twin (adopt the ambition, reject the method)

**Why this is in the lane:** Surya explicitly credits Hawkins as design inspiration for the Wheel — *"I was very inspired by the Hawkins Levels of Consciousness… only numerically you can have enough detail benchmarking how the meditation path looks like"* (internal canon S1). Every Wheel scale-point carries a Hawkins-LOC-extension value. So Waypoint **inherits Hawkins' ambition (a numeric consciousness scale) and must consciously *not* inherit his method.**

**The method and its critique (verified):** Hawkins (*Power vs. Force*, 1995) assigned calibration numbers via **applied-kinesiology muscle-testing** — a binary strong/weak arm-test read as a truth-detector. The critiques are decisive:
- Muscle-testing/applied-kinesiology has **no demonstrated reliability or validity** for this use; the specific AK diagnostic procedures are refuted or unsupported when disentangled from ordinary orthopedic muscle testing (peer-reviewed reviews: PMC2000870, PMC1847521).
- Hawkins claimed "absolute replicability" but the method **fails double-blind testing** and had **no independent verification**; consensus classes the calibration as pseudoscience.

**The exact anti-pattern Waypoint must avoid, made concrete:**
1. **Single unvalidated rater with no inter-rater check** — Hawkins was the sole calibrator. Waypoint's spec names this as its #1 validity threat (single-rater Surya anchor) and commits to logging rationale + adding inter-rater when a second qualified rater exists (§7, §11). *Do not let the Wheel become a one-oracle instrument the way Hawkins' scale did.*
2. **False precision / unfalsifiable point-claims** — Hawkins gave exact numbers with no error bars. Waypoint's countermeasure is **distributions + credible intervals + abstention** (§4), never a bare scalar.
3. **Non-reproducible calibration procedure** — the antidote is Waypoint's **triangulated ground truth** (interview + blinded dossier + instrument battery + longitudinal behavior, §7) and structure-scoring, not a private felt-sense read.

**Net:** Hawkins is the worked example of what happens when the numeric ambition is not disciplined by measurement rigor — the spec's entire validation protocol reads as a point-by-point repudiation of his method. Cite Hawkins in the dossier as the negative control.

## 11. Cross-tradition synthesis — the recurring verification principles

Independently, across nine traditions, the same moves recur. These are the load-bearing design lessons:

1. **Structure over content.** Every durable tradition scores *how* an experience is reported and *what the practitioner does with it*, never the doctrinal correctness of the words (Mahāsi three-phase; Zen jakugo; Dzogchen grasped-vs-released). The words are the faked layer. → **Waypoint marker bank: score report structure + subsequent behavior; treat vocabulary as weak/negative evidence.**
2. **States are not stations.** Sufism (ḥāl/maqām), Dzogchen (nyams/realization), Patañjali (ānanda is not the end), Christian (consolation/infused grace), bhūmi (equipoise identical, only traits differ) all separate *transient given experiences* from *durable earned attainment*. → **Waypoint: a peak-state report advances the band posterior only if it is volitionally reproducible + persistent; otherwise annotate as phase (spec §6 HGF rule).**
3. **Trait/behavior discriminates the high bands, not peak-states.** Bhūmi (post-meditation paramitas), Mahāsi (fruition confirmed by trait change), Zen (marketplace return). → **Weight off-cushion behavioral markers heavily above ~Awakening.**
4. **An information ceiling on report-only assessment is universal.** Pointing-out (live), dokusan (live), huǒhòu (oral-only), ñāṇa placement (teacher across sessions), directors (Christian). → **Quantify the interview-vs-dossier delta; expect it to be large; don't assume a dossier can match a live interview.**
5. **The map contaminates the report.** Every tradition with a public map (ñāṇas, kōan answers, nyams, bhūmis) has a named scripting problem and a purpose-built countermeasure (honesty injunction; unscripted sassho; teacher's live read). → **Waypoint: unscripted follow-up probes from angles the Wheel doesn't publish; never a probe with a discoverable correct answer.**
6. **Advanced ≠ permanently rarefied; the path spirals.** Ox-herding marketplace, Batchelor's spiral, U-shaped destabilization. → **Phase model is not optional; non-linearity and returns-to-difficulty are expected (spec §3).**
7. **Destabilization has characteristic signatures distinct from progress.** Neidan miscultivation, John's three signs, dukkha ñāṇas. → **Safety flags key on specific signatures, not on "difficulty" per se (Lane 4).**
8. **Per-pillar unevenness is real and traditionally recognized.** Vidyādhara (mind ripened, body not); Teresa's many rooms; the Wheel's four toolkits. → **Per-pillar profile over a scalar (spec §3).**

## 12. The 20 transferable verification-question / probe patterns

For Waypoint's **invisible conversational probes** (spec §5.2): woven into Wisdom conversation, never framed as assessment, scored on the **structure** of the response, logged with item-id. Each pattern below gives the *scoring target* and its *tradition provenance*. None has a discoverable "correct answer" — they score form, not content. These feed the Probe Item Bank v0 (deliverable §10.3) for Surya calibration.

**Awareness / metacognition pillar**
1. **The three-phase episode probe** (Mahāsi). "What was that like — what happened?" Score whether a difficult episode is reported as a *sequence* (arose → noticed → labeled → what happened to it) with short noticing-latency, vs collapsed into undifferentiated content. Graded metacognitive granularity.
2. **Noticing-latency probe** (Mahāsi). Score *how soon after onset* the practitioner reports having noticed a reaction ("I caught it as it was forming" vs "I realized hours later"). Faster, earlier noticing = deeper.
3. **Reification test** (Dzogchen dereification / beautiful-loop). Listen for spontaneous "anger arose and passed" (thoughts/emotions as ownerless events) vs "I am an angry person" (naïve-realist reification). The single strongest linguistic stage marker — but discount if the phrasing is clearly parroted map-vocabulary (cross-check with structure).
4. **Attention-on-attention probe** (jhāna J6 / awareness pillar). Ask about the *knowing* itself, not the object ("was there a sense of awareness being aware of itself?"). Score whether the distinction is lived or merely repeated.

**State-vs-station / position-vs-phase (governs whether evidence moves the slow latent)**
5. **Reproducibility-at-will probe** (Sufi maqām/ḥāl; jhāna five masteries). "Can you get there again on purpose?" A capacity summonable at will + stable = station/position (advances posterior). A gift they can't reproduce = state/phase (annotate, don't advance).
6. **Duration & clean-exit probe** (Pa-Auk five masteries). For a claimed absorption: could they pre-resolve a length, sustain it, and exit cleanly? Volitional control > phenomenological label.
7. **Off-cushion persistence probe** (bhūmi post-meditation qualities). "How does this show up when you're *not* meditating — at work, in an argument?" Trait-level persistence discriminates the higher bands; peak-state reports alone do not.
8. **Grasping-vs-releasing probe** (Dzogchen nyams). When bliss/clarity/thought-free states are reported, score the *relationship*: held as an attainment to protect (nyams-grasping, lower) vs noticed and let pass (realization stance, higher). Non-attachment is the marker, not the state.

**Confusion-pair discriminators (spec §3)**
9. **Bliss-is-not-the-end probe** (Patañjali ānanda; pīti findings). If a blissful/absorptive state is reported as the summit, that misidentification is itself a placement signal. Probe whether they treat bliss as a milestone or a terminus.
10. **Absorption-vs-dullness probe** (Patañjali subtlety; f-SNR). For a low-content state, probe *clarity-of-knowing* and *deviance-sensitivity* ("if something unexpected happened, would you have caught it?"). Genuine absorption sharpens sensitivity; dullness dulls it — same low-content report, opposite clarity.
11. **Dark-night-vs-depression differential** (John of the Cross, three signs). Distinguish: (a) dryness that also removes pleasure in *worldly* things, (b) *retained/heightened* longing-and-care toward the path, (c) the *old method* no longer working — vs depression's global anhedonia, self-reproach, and loss of the goal itself. Route to Lane 4 flag logic; all three signs present → dark-night reading, not clinical (but never a diagnosis).
12. **Equanimity-vs-bypassing probe** (Dzogchen; f-SNR). Real equanimity *increases* contact with difficult material; bypassing/dissociation *avoids* it. Probe whether calm coexists with full contact ("were you still fully feeling it?") or replaces feeling.
13. **Intensity-vs-destabilization probe** (Neidan miscultivation; devotional-intensity pair). For high-arousal spiritual experiences, probe for miscultivation/destabilization signatures (uncontrolled energy, insomnia, head-pressure, fragmentation) vs integrated intensity. Feeds the safety flag.

**Anti-scripting / contamination guards**
14. **Unscripted fresh-angle follow-up** (Zen sassho). After any "advanced" claim, ask a follow-up from an angle the published map doesn't cover, that can only be answered from lived experience. Book-knowledge answers stall; lived experience improvises. The lane's core anti-faking instrument.
15. **Show-don't-tell probe** (Zen jakugo). Invite an indirect/expressive account (an image, a concrete moment) rather than a doctrinal statement. Score aptness/embodiment over correctness. Genuine insight expresses obliquely; imitation recites.
16. **Claim-behavior consistency check** (Mahāsi honesty; telemetry). Cross the verbal claim against practice telemetry and prior reports (spec §6 consistency penalty). Divergence (claims stream-entry but practice is sporadic) deflates confidence.

**Trajectory / phase / calibration**
17. **Spiral/return probe** (ox-herding; U-curve). Normalize regression: "has it ever felt like going backwards?" Score whether difficulty is framed as *return-with-more-understanding* (mature) vs catastrophized as failure (or, conversely, denied — bypassing). A dark-night dip reported without alarm is a maturity signal, not regression.
18. **Method-obsolescence probe** (John's 3rd sign; predictive-processing). "Does the technique that used to work still work?" A reported *loss of the old method accompanied by a subtler mode opening* is a transition signature, not decline.
19. **Under-claiming / humility calibration** (Mahāsi fruition under-claimed; self-presentation threat). Genuine deep attainers tend to *under*-report; readers over-report. Weight *spontaneous, structurally-rich, hedged* reports above *confident, vocabulary-heavy, unprompted* ones. Corrects the spec's bidirectional self-presentation distortion (§7).
20. **Somatic-specificity probe** (Neidan verification signs). For body/energy-pillar claims (breathwork gates, reverse breathing), probe for *specific, checkable somatic detail* (locus, quality, sequence, e.g. warmth-then-circulation-then-sweet-saliva) vs generic "I felt energy." Specificity that matches known physiology is hard to fabricate; genericness is cheap.

**Delivery constraints (all patterns):** invisible (never "let me assess you"), frequency-capped, never during flagged-vulnerable moments, never repeated verbatim, item-id logged for scoring, and — per the anti-scripting lesson — **rotated and unscripted** so no probe accumulates a discoverable correct answer. Calibrated and approved by Surya before use (spec §5.2, §10.3).
